Books About the Human Mind
Endorsed by Sioux Falls Feminists

Sioux Falls Feminists recommends the following books about the Workings of the Human Mind. They will help you understand yourself as well as others, including those who are trying to manipulate you and intimidate you.

There are so many good books here it is hard to write about just a few. One book drives a stake into the heart of "Tabula Rasa" and the idea that we are born without any predispositions to anything. The Blank Slate by Steven Pinker put "Tabula Rasa" to sleep once and for all. There is no blank slate. We are born with genetic determinates just like any other animal. Twin studies, brain scans, and human universals have skewed the idea of the superiority of humans in any fundamental way. We are just another animal, more intelligence, more dominate, more brutal than many, with more conscious control over our behavior than most, but still just another animal, just another step in evolution. Sioux Falls Feminists says it's about time we accept that fact.

And be sure to check out the results of twin studies. They help us determine what is genetic and what is learned and what is both. Twin studies are covered by Steven Pinker in The Blank Slate and there is more in Twins and Twins Revisited.

And the book The Lucifer Effect, and the movie based on it, The Experiment, are also excellent examples of what can happen when good men are given absolute power over others. It ain't pretty. That whole dominance, controlling, intimidating, and manipulative behavior thing just comes leaping out of the woodwork. It's probably more or less in all of us. "Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely" seems to be a truism. (Don't bother getting the American version of The Experiment. It is a poor substitute for the European version recommended here.)

Sioux Fall Feminists recommends checking out all the book descriptions. You should find at least one or two books worth reading.
