2015 Statistics at Child Advocacy Centers of South Dakota

Total number of children served at the CAC: 1,513

  • Boy Children - 547 (36%)
  • Girl Children - 966 (64%)

Age of children at first contact with center:

  • 0-6 years – 709 (47%)
  • 7-12 years – 570 (38%)
  • 13-18 years – 234 (15%)

Total number of alleged offenders: 1,114

Relationship of alleged offender to child:

  • Parent – 368 (32%)
  • Stepparent – 66 (6%)
  • Other Relative – 293 (25%)
  • Parent’s boyfriend/girlfriend – 98 (8.5%)
  • Other known person – 299 (26%)
  • Unknown – 28 (2.5%)

Note that 71.5% are PARENTS OR RELATIVES OR THEIR FRIENDS. 26% are probably group leaders of groups that have some authority over the child. ONLY 2.5% are strangers off the street so to speak. It's the child's parents and relatives they must be most concerned about, strangers not nearly as much. And who's the biggest physical abuser and child sex molester of them all? Daddy!

Age of alleged offenders:

  • Under 13 – 111 (13%)
  • Age 13 to 17 – 120 (14%)
  • Age 18+ – 638 (73%)
  • Alleged Offender Age Undisclosed – 257

Note it's the adults the children must be most concerned about.

Types of Abuse Reported:

  • Sexual Abuse – 1,096 (53.5%)
  • Physical Abuse – 382 (18.5%)
  • Neglect – 208 (10%)
  • Witness to Violence – 232 (11.5%)
  • Drug Endangerment – 109 (5.5%)
  • Other – 20 (1.0%)

Note that Child Sex Abuse is over 50% of the abuse reported. It's THREE times the physical abuse.

In Europe they only have 1/4th of the Child Sex Abuse they do in America. How can that be? They teach their 6 and 7 year-old children exactly what child sex abuse is and who to watch out for. Knowledge is what protects their children. We should do that here. Keeping children ignorant does not protect their innocence. It just makes them easy victims for child sex molesters.
