The Massie Affair
Was murder justified to defend his wife's honor?

When the young wife of a Navy lieutenant accused five local men - two Hawaiians, two Japanese and one Chinese-Hawaiian - of raping her on a deserted stretch of road near downtown Honolulu, it was assumed that justice would be swift and sure. The alleged victim, Thalia Fortescue Massie, was the daughter of well-connected Washington, D.C. socialites. And the U.S. Navy, which held sway in the territory of Hawaii, meant to send a strong message to the local population. Instead, that sensational accusation set off a chain of events that revealed some ugly truths about Hawaii and the Americans who ruled it. After a mistrial in the rape case, the admirals at Pearl Harbor were stunned, and incited their men to take revenge on the accused men. Hearst headlines spewed racial hate. Congress threatened to put the islands under martial law. More shocking, Thalia's husband and her mother, Grace Fortescue, murdered one of the defendants, Joseph Kahahawai. In the sensational trial that followed, celebrity attorney Clarence Darrow offered an impassioned defense on behalf of the Navy man and his mother-in-law, calling the murder an "honor killing." As this American Experience film shows for native Hawaiians and Asian immigrants, the verdict and its shocking aftermath would mark the "Massie Affair" as the most bitter and wounding event in the history of Territorial Hawaii.
